We have an innate and almost biological need to be social, form bonds, and communities. Wearing something is a simple way to indicate who you are and who you want to meet.

For most, not all, dressing the part is to convey that you’ve shared the same experiences or have similar backgrounds, share similar values and thus ‘know the rules’. The same rules. Thus, you belong, you fit in.

..But it wasn’t okay. I was sure the above anecdote was not just exclusive to me. Why couldn’t I wear my cropped bandeau top with high-waisted jeans in semi-intoxicated peace? If I had worn a sari, I would have shown much more skin. Are we Indians more enthnocentric[1] than we recognize? Should we be more accepting? Is our cultural conservatism and the entrenchment of religiosity restraining our self-defined ‘modern’ outlooks and understandings? Is this necessarily a bad ‘thing’?…

I’ve been feeling this surge over the weekend. Perhaps for world domination? (Ha) Definitely a deeper hunger developing though, the status quo isn’t enough. Theres something i’m on to but its difficult to articulate.

Recently had a discussion about deeper intuition, many designers have openly talked about following it in design and through their career, eg. Sabyasachi Mukherjee. But I speculate, especially with creative people, that they develop a very highly sensitive schemata that enables to navigate situations and anticipate trends, or that a style they’ve pioneered will “just work”. Theyre concious and subconcious is always switched “on” processing and assimilating enviroments long before and after they intend to. In between the seconds of sleep and waking, many get their ‘ideas’ or inspiration in those moments when their minds try to make sense of reality, Karl Largerfeld has articulated this many times.

I genuinely believe that this intuition, that this wider subconscious understanding of the world is an extension of this deeper hunger, this intense desire to… The word escapes me. Any suggestions?

Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser (Left) has been bleeping on my fashion icon radar for a while. There is something disconcerting about the press swooning over Michelle, when we have this first wife’s sartorial elegance to admire. She (and by that her P.E fund) recently purchased Valentino, yes, the actual company, a stake in Anya Hindmarch and if one can remember last year the bought Harrods. They are also creating their own luxury label called Qela, i’m curious to see what they come up with.

Seriously impeccable panache. My next posts will be themed on her. Here she is in some casual Rolland.
